Carnegie Mellon University'sMaterials Science and Engineering Department will meet to discuss a new research agreement with officials from ShanghaiBaosteel Corp.
Alan Cramb, head of Carnegie Mellon's Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the POSCO Professor of Iron and Steelmaking, said the agreement involves working with a new technology for steel production.
The 10-person Chinese delegation will be led by Ai Baojun, president of Baosteel, formerly Baoshan Iron & Steel and China's largest iron and steel maker. It makes steel formed as billets, tubes, pipes, bars and plates for use in a variety of markets including shipbuilding, construction, and the auto and oil industries. The company, a member of the university's Center for Iron and Steelmaking, employs 100,000 persons and produces more than 20 million tons of crude steel annually.
"There will also be an educational and research exchange program developed through this new research agreement," Cramb said.
